Getting to Zanzibar from Dar es Salaam has never been easier with the introduction some years ago of the fast ferry service that now operates 4 times a day in each direction. Azam Marine have continued to upgrade their fleet over the years and the Kilimanjaro 5 and 6 are super comfortable with a sailing time of only 2 hours. This can be a little less on a good day and it sure beats what was on offer 28 years ago. First time here in 1989 I endured a 9-hour marathon crouched down in the hull of an old Dhow, camera bag on knees to keep it out of the water that was swilling around our feet and praying that the sound of the water pump would continue. Once on the Island, we of course came to the realisation that we had to face the same journey back, but worth every minute.
These days however you have the choice of economy, business or VIP class with snacks, cold drinks and even a movie. We recently ended up in business as economy class was full, but don’t regret paying the extra $5 Usd and have booked it again for our return.
It isn’t all plain sailing and if you don’t travel well on water some sea sickness pills would be advisable.
It’s also a good idea to head down to the Azam booking office the day before if you have your heart set on economy.
Check out Azam Marines website for the latest sailing times and prices.
