Zanzibar by night

Every evening locals and tourists alike gravitate towards the open-air market on the waterfront in Stone town to catch up on the day’s events and have a bite to eat. As you would expect there is a wide array of fresh seafood on offer including octopus, prawns, tuna, crayfish calamari.

For those not into seafood the beef or chicken kababs are also a hit, along with the samosa, mandazi (a local type of doughnut) and all washed down with freshly squeezed sugar cane or fruit juice.

However, in my mind the star of the market has to be the Zanzibar Pizza. While although not a pizza in the traditional sense it is a taste sensation that has the potential to change your life, especially if you over do it on the chilli. An impossibly thin dough is rolled out by hand then filled with pre-cooked beef mince, egg, mayonnaise, laughing cow cheese, onion, tomato and chilli to taste. Folded over and fried on a hot skillet for a few minutes and served up on a paper plate. For the sweet tooth try the desert pizza with banana and Nutella.

The evening market is something that cannot be missed while on Zanzibar and even if you are not that adventurous when it comes to the food you can still enjoy the cool evening air and have a chat with some of the locals.
