Leaving New Zealand at  around 21 for the UK on a working holiday was the thing to do for a lot of Kiwi’s back in the day. A 2-year work permit was the norm , however as my grandparents were from the UK I could, at the time get right of abode giving me pretty much an indefinite time to be in the UK. Never the less I have a vague memory of telling my boss Doug at my 21st that I would be back in 6 months to a year, I was wrong.  Having done several jaunts into Europe I decided to do an overland safari from Nairobi to Cape Town in 1989, little did I know at the time that this would play such a huge part in my life. It took me several years to get a chance to return to Africa to work but in 1992 I was accepted by Kumuka Expeditions onto a training trip as a tour leader. After an intensive 4-week training trip, 36 trainees were whittled down to 11 and offered jobs, luckily, I was one of the 11.

This led to me spending the next 18 years as both a tour leader/ owner driver and manager carrying out 10-week overland camping safaris from Nairobi to Harare and Cape Town. Clearly this broke the promise I made to Doug at my 21’st, sorry Doug.

After a few years back in NZ recently I am now back on the African continent looking for the next adventure.

So, follow me on the journey.
