A trip to the spice Island of Zanzibar would not quite be compete without a visit to the spice market on the edge of stone…….

Although a little hectic at times a stroll through the market is a great way to spend an hour or two. Chatting with the vendors and getting to sample some of the many spices is a great way to gain a bit of an insight on how they are used in some of the local dishes so you can attempt to recreate when you get home.

There is also an extensive fruit and vegetable section in the market so if you’re planning a trip to the North, East or South Beaches it’s a good place to stop to grab a few things for the road. Beware the front entrance of the market if you are either a vegetarian, a bit squeamish or have had a little too much Konyagi the night before, as you pass in-between the meat and fish markets.
If in doubt probably better to skirt the issue and the front entrance, by heading around the back way into the market.
In saying that if you are up for a wander through the fish market? It is well worth it. Check out what has come off the boats from the night before and get some inside info on what the restaurants will be serving later in the day.
As for the meat market? You can decide.
